Kent's Rob Key and James Tredwell hope a good start to the season could earn them recognition for England this year after making the performance squad.
Captain Key told BBC Radio Kent: "I'm a better player now [than when last capped three years ago]. I probably played far too early in hindsight.
"Now at 28, I'm more shrewd and I've want to get back in that side."
Uncapped spinner Tredwell, 26, said: "If I perform well, you never know I might get a call-up."
Making his debut at 23, Key played the last of his 15 tests in South Africa in 2005, scoring 775 runs at an average of 31 overall for England.
Tredwell toured with the England one-day squad in New Zealand in the winter.
