Interview: Hawks skipper Nic Pothas Analysis: We needed more from our middle-order
Hampshire made a thunderous start, with Carberry top scoring against his former team-mates, but seamer Simon Cook (2-21) and off-spinner James Tredwell (1-20) applied the breaks.
In reply, Rob Key and Joe Denly struck 56 in six overs for Kent before opener Key was run out in attempting a second run to Billy Taylor at third man.
England Lions batsman Denly then anchored the innings and added a further 39 to the total with Martin van Jaarsveld before Liam Dawson got the South African lbw.
Nantie Hayward eventually claimed Denly's wicket but his fourth successive cup 50 of the summer ensured the 21-year-old received a standing ovation from the 5,000-strong crowd.
In the 17th over, Kemp and Mahmood hit 19 runs but Taylor's accurate bowling meant Kent still required eight off the last over.
Darren Stevens and Geraint Jones were dismissed before Mahmood produced some magic to clatter the last ball through mid-wicket for victory.
