Dimitri Mascarenhas's Indian Premier League debut was put on hold as he was left out of the Rajasthan Royals team to face Kolkata Knight Riders.
Mascarenhas, 30, England's only representative in the IPL, arrived in India on Monday after captaining Hampshire during April.
The Royals have won three of their four matches and were playing the Knight Riders in Jaipur on Thursday.
But with only four overseas players permitted, Mascarenhas was omitted.
The Hampshire all-rounder has signed a short-term deal with the franchise, who are captained and coached by the iconic bowler, Shane Warne.
Mascarenhas was involved in England's one-day side in the recent tour of New Zealand but has admitted his involvement in the IPL could hinder his international prospects.
The Royals used Warne, Graeme Smith, Shane Watson and Sohail Tanvir as their four internationals.
