Mustard, 23, has struggled with the bat in four-day games but took his Twenty20 tally to 800 runs with a useful 40 in Sunday's draw against Yorkshire.
"It's nice to come into Twenty20 with nothing to lose, you can play a few big shots," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.
"I haven't had the best start to the season but hopefully Twenty20 can get my season up and running again."
Durham top the Northern section of the Twenty20 Cup with three games to play, and could qualify for the knockout stages for the first time since the tournament's inception in 2003.
And England international Mustard is adamant the personnel is strong enough to see them through - if they concentrate on the game.
"I think we're in a very strong position - we've got Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Lancashire to play again, and if we can win two of them hopefully we can finish top of the group," he said.
"Everyone knows what type of side we've got, we've got a world-class side, but can we perform on the day?"
Yorkshire will face Durham in the Twenty20 Cup at Durham's Riverside ground on Tuesday.
