Northamptonshire registered their first County Championship Division Two win of the season as they hammered Glamorgan by an innings and 99 runs at Swansea.

The hosts began play needing 253 runs to make Northamptonshire bat again.

But some fine swing bowling from David Lucas and Johannes van der Wath soon reduced them to 2-3 and then 21-5.

Mark Wallace (43), Robert Croft (37) and James Harris (46) offered lower order resistance but the hosts could only muster 154.

Van der Wath ended with 2-29 while Lucas claimed 3-32 and they ensured Glamorgan lost their first three wickets in the space of six balls.

Gareth Rees was the first to go, edging a good van der Wath delivery behind, before Matthew Wood was pinned lbw by Lucas and Michael Powell was caught behind wafting at a wide ball from Lucas.

Matters got worse for the Welshmen when Jamie Dalrymple edged a Van der Wath delivery to make it 7-4 and skipper David Hemp was then bowled by an in-swinging Lucas yorker.

Wallace and Harris frustrated the visitors for 22 overs, during which time they added 64 for the sixth wicket, before the wicketkeeper was bowled by Jason Brown to leave Glamorgan 75-6.

Harris and Croft almost doubled their team's score in a partnership worth 73 before Harris holed out to midwicket off Brown just four short of his half century, with Croft soon following, trapped in front by Andrew Hall.

Hall, who ended with 3-5, then claimed Dean Cosker leg before and wrapped up the victory by having David Harrison caught by Nicky Boje in the gully.
