Carter smashed four sixes and five fours as he compiled 52 off 28 balls, before Jonathan Trott steered the vistors home with 4.3 overs left.
Ant Botha (3-15) and Chris Martin (2-15) had ensured Northants posted their lowest Twenty20 total of 102.
The result saw Warwickshire leap-frog Northants at the top of the division.
Northants won the toss and opted to bat, but were always struggling to post a big total after openers Rob White and Niall O'Brien fell to New Zealand international Martin.
Three wickets then fell in quick succession to leave the hosts reeling on 37-5, and despite a brief fightback led by Riki Wessels, Northants collapsed to 67-9.
Northants' tail did wag and Johann Louw, who hit two sixes in his unbeaten 21, and Jason Brown (13 not out) stayed around to give Warwickshire a three-figure target to chase down.
But it was never likely to be enough and Carter pulled and cut boundary after boundary.
His assault allowed Trott to play in a more orthodox fashion and after Carter was caught and bowled to Jason Brown, Jim Troughton joined the opener to see Warwickshire home with ease.
