They needed only 22 to win, of course, having bowled Kent out for 293 on Friday, with Yasir Arafat unable to bat because of abdominal pains.
Even so, given the inclement weather in the south of England they were glad the start was only delayed by 15 minutes.
Matthew Wood struck three fours to make an unbeaten 17 from 20 balls and Will Jefferson hit one in his five not out.
Unsurprisingly given the state of the match, the ground was virtually empty as play began under yet more cold and overcast conditions.
Wood struck a fluent cover drive off Azhar Mahmood in the fourth over and had an all-run four in the same over.
The match-winning runs came from another boundary, also struck through the covers off Mahmood by Wood.
Notts skipper Chris Read was delighted to begin the campaign with such a comprehensive win.
"An exceptional four days," he said of his team's performance. "From the moment we lost the toss and went out on the field the opening bowlers started exceptionally well and put the pressure on and got early wickets.
"We've been a bit up and down in recent seasons, we gained promotion in 2004 and promptly won the Championship in 2005 only to come back down the year after.
"It's all been topsy-turvy, but we believe that we belong in Division One and to start the season like this is obviously very sweet."
