England bowlers from both sides were amongst the wickets as Notts closed day two 299 behind Yorkshire at 0-1.
Michael Vaughan pulled Stuart Broad for six but the young paceman struck in his next over when Vaughan did not control another pull and found deep square-leg.
Broad pinned Andrew Gale and had Adil rashid caught at second slip, but Jacques Rudolph shared 106 with Gerard Brophy and was unbeaten on 104 in 299.
Matthew Hoggard then trapped Will Jefferson in the final over of the day.
Vaughan added only a single in the opening 38 minutes before steering Ryan Sidebottom to the third man boundary.
The second wicket pair had added a patient 45 in 19 overs when Anthony McGrath edged an intended pull at a bouncer from Charlie Shreck straight into Chris Read's gloves.
Rudolph did well to survive against a superb spell with the new ball from Sidebottom.
Brophy was first to fifty, from 99 balls featuring seven fours, while Rudolph took 165 deliveries to reach his half-century, which contained only three fours.
England one-day spinner Graeme Swann captured four quick wickets and Rudolph was still in the 90s when last man Hoggard arrived at the crease.
But the South African left-hander struck Mark Ealham through the covers and raced through for three.
Yorkshire fell one run short of a third batting point when Hoggard was lbw, but the seamer gave them a late bonus by trapping the angular Jefferson for a duck.
