Durham fast bowler Graham Onions has expressed his disappointment that team-mate Liam Plunkett could be out for up to six weeks with a side strain.

However the England Lion is confident that Plunkett can return to form.

"We've heard that Liam will out for about six weeks and it's a bit disappointing for all of us at Durham," Onions told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"He's strong, he'll keep himself fit in the gym and he'll be ready when the season gets tough half way through."

Alongside players such as Phil Mustard, Plunkett and Paul Collingwood, Onions has been subject to England speculation.

And after being called up to the England Lions side to face New Zealand next week, the 25-year-old sees the recognition as a positive for the county side, even if it means missing Durham matches.

"For me it's bitterly disappointing that I'll miss out on the game with Hampshire," he said.

"But it's an opportunity and it's good for Durham that they're producing players that can potentially go on to play for England.

"Obviously I'd like to think I would be a big miss to the side but there is strength in depth in Durham's squad and I'm sure whoever comes in will do a very good job."
