A century from Chris Read and valuable lower-order runs from Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad boosted Nottinghamshire's chances of forcing a win at Yorkshire.

The visitors ended day three on 356-6, 57 ahead, after a tremendous recovery.

They were struggling on 115-5 before Read (115no) and Swann (68) shared 136 to turn a parlous situation around.

Skipper Read and Broad (52no) then put on an unbroken 105 and though Matthew Hoggard took two wickets, Yorkshire will face a difficult final day.

Tim Bresnan made the first breakthrough for them when Matt Wood drove casually and edged behind, while Morne Morkel saw Adam Voges flicking a leg-side catch to the keeper.

Samit Patel was bowled by Hoggard after leaving a delivery which seamed to make it 86-4 and it got worse when Wagh, who had moved on to a patient half-century, cut Darren Gough low to Adil Rashid at point.

Swann and Read took that as a cue to launch a 28-over assault, which Swann began by smacking Gough for a leg-side six before Read cracked three boundaries in one over from the Tykes skipper.

Swann stepped down the track to drive leg-spinner Rashid for two sixes as he got to 50 off only 47 balls and Read reached the landmark off 80 deliveries.

Anthony McGrath eventually broke the stand by trapping Swann lbw but Morkel limped off twice with a tight hamstring as Notts continued to motor.

Broad produced two sizzling drives in one Hoggard over as he outscored Read for a while.

The latter was spilled on 93 when he slashed Gough hard to Bresnan at second slip before completing a splendid century off 168 balls.

Broad's fifty came off 70 deliveries and though Morkel later insisted he would be fit to bowl on Saturday, his team will need to take quick wickets to launch their own fightback.
